Day 1: Chapter 1.1 Meaning of anthropology and a Answer writing challenge.

HELLO FRIENDS,

Today’s topic: paper 1 chapter 1.1 meaning, scope and development of anthropology.

NOTE: To complete the syllabus we need to know the basic knowledge of each topic given in the syllabus. For example chapter 1.1 we need to know 3 things in total.

1. What is the meaning of anthropology?

What is the meaning of anthropology?

Anthropology term comes from the Greek anthropos for “man, human”

and logos for “study” Translated into study of humanity. Anthropologist want to discover when, where, and why humans appeared on the earth, how and why they have changed, and

How and why the biological and cultural features of modern human population’s vary. It is the most comprehensive of all the sciences dealing with man. Inherent curiosity of man about himself was the prime factor influence the emergence of anthropology.

Definition:

1. Aristotle-father of anthropology, coined ,defined and explained the term anthropology “gossip that revolves around man“

2. In 18th century Emanuel Kant published the book “anthropology”

“Study which describes and explains the animal origins, social, as well as cultural development and progress of man.

3. 20th century anthropologist like Malinowski, Radcliffe brown, Franz boas described that scope of anthropology is to study of biology, culture and society of man throughout time and in all parts of the world.

4. A discipline that studies humans, focusing on the study of differences and similarities, both biological and cultural, in human populations and it concerned with typical biological and cultural characteristics of human Populations in all periods and in all parts of the world.


Conclusion: It’s the scientific approach to study of social, physical, and cultural behavior of man.


Timeline of development of anthropology.

NOTE: Definitions need to mug up and we cannot replace it with our own definition. In many interview toppers suggested to write the definition as it is. So don’t wait just mug up.

If we see previous questions one can easily see the pattern of asking questions.

1. Definition of anthropology is asked and it is linked with chapter 1.3. It is very imp to remember the definition because you can be asked to answer some questions in interview also, so be prepared for it.

2. Learn some definitions given by famous anthropologist and think and prepare a definition of yours (you can learn above definitions).


NOTE

Please take a A4 size paper and margin both sides like UPSC format. Below I am giving a question to which you have to write answer to that question in 7 minutes(no extra time please, you will be getting approx 7 minutes to write answer to each question in UPSC mains optional anthropology ) and login to your account and send me the photocopy of answer and it will be checked within one day.

PLEASE DON’T CHEAT, AT END OF THE DAY YOU ARE THE LOSER IF YOU CHEAT.IAM JUST A CATALYST TRYING TO HELP YOU PREPARE WELL FOR MAINS OPTIONAL.NOTHING IS EASY IN THE WORLD AND YOU WILL GET TO KNOW IF IT IS HARD/EASY BY PRACTISING/DOING IT.
